This event was our first use of a retreat called Double Bear in the Santa Cruz hills near Bear Creek. This private patch of ground had several yurt stractures... one for meals, another for activities, and a couple others for sleeping. We had group leaders who offered a variety of workshops involving body movement and connection, plus some simple fun stuff.

video-17 5:47 Contact Dance is an improvisational art of body movement with several partners flowing together in the moment.
video-18 5:34 The combined shapes our bodies make are infinitely variable as we try to keep moving and staying connected.
video-19 7:14 The next morning, after breakfast, we are back with some very interesting and challenging body/mind activities.
video-20 6:45 We gradually become more attuned to each other's movements and body positions by varying the parameters.
video-21 8:10 The groups become bigger and more entangled making it a challenge to find new possibilities for connection and movement.
video-22 7:29 We're getting close to the end. We now split into those who are observers and those who move and are observed.
video-23 6:25 Partners switch and we go through the exercise once again. Interesting discussions ensue.
video-24 7:14 In this final video everyone creates their own movement then the group discusses the experience.
video-25 5:05 A butoh dance event is coming up and first the nature and history of this modern Japanese movement art are discussed.
video-26 6:05 The first exercises prepare us for a state of body and mind where movements arise form the subconscious.
video-27 6:29 "You are molten lava" is what we are instructed. Let's see what happens. Next exercise: "Walk with the Dead"
video-28 5:44 This final butoh segment has us moving while carrying the tray of infinite future and past lives.
video-29 5:29 After Butoh, it's time to relax while waiting for dinner. Bodypainting with shades of clay or relaxing by the hot-tub.
video-30 8:03 In the early evening people showed off their various talents. Gymastics, music, poetry...
video-31 8:31 Part 2: In the early evening people showed off their various talents. Gymastics, music, poetry...
video-32 7:08 Nighttime around the fire and a few of us give a spooky butoh performance in the dark.
video-33 7:14 First we oil up our bodies, then out into the night for fire fun! It's thrilling to watch the skilled spinning of hot flames.
video-34 5:20 The art is called "poi" and we now have 3 performers at the same time creating a whirlwind of flames.
video-35 5:03 Leah uses her poi flame to burn the hair off people's bodies. Only a couple of people were brave enough to play with fire.
video-36 4:14 Martha on her own, channeled a butoh performance that had her crawling under the cottage at night.
